A business owner searches for their own service on Google and discovers that competitors appear before them. The first reaction is often to assume that the website needs more keywords or that the business needs to publish hundreds of articles.
The problem may be much simpler. Important pages may not clearly explain what the business offers, page titles may be poorly written, headings may be confusing, or the website may not provide enough useful information for either customers or search engines to understand its purpose.
This is where on-page SEO comes in. It is the process of improving the content and elements on individual webpages so that they are clearer, more useful, and easier for search engines to understand.
1. Start With the Search Intent
Before changing a page, think about what someone is actually trying to find.
Someone searching for "accounting services in Lagos" has a different intention from someone searching for "how to register a business in Nigeria." One may be looking for a service provider, while the other may be looking for information.
Your page should therefore address the purpose behind the search rather than simply repeating the search phrase throughout the content.
If a Nigerian business provides accounting services, for example, its service page should explain what it offers, who it serves, where it operates, and how potential customers can get started.
2. Write Clear Page Titles
The page title helps search engines and users understand what a webpage is about. It is also commonly displayed in search results.
Instead of giving every page the same generic title such as "Welcome | Company Name," create titles that describe the actual page.
A Lagos-based interior design company might use a title such as "Interior Design Services in Lagos | Company Name" for a relevant service page. The title should be accurate and written naturally rather than stuffed with repeated keywords.
3. Use Headings Properly
Headings help organise a webpage so visitors can understand the structure of the information.
Your main heading should clearly communicate what the page is about. Supporting headings can then divide the content into meaningful sections.
For example, a page about commercial cleaning services could explain the service, the types of businesses served, the process, pricing information where appropriate, and how to request a quotation.
Headings should help people navigate the content rather than being created simply to insert additional keywords.
4. Make the Content Actually Useful
One of the most important parts of on-page SEO is the content itself.
A page should answer the questions that a potential customer is likely to have. If you sell construction services, visitors may want to know what types of projects you handle, where you operate, how your process works, what affects pricing, and how they can contact you.
Adding paragraphs that repeat the same keyword will not make the page more useful. Good content gives visitors enough information to understand the subject and decide what to do next.
5. Use Keywords Naturally
Keywords still have a role in helping search engines understand the subject of a page, but they should not control the entire writing process.
If a business offers web design in Lagos, the phrase can naturally appear in relevant parts of the page. There is no need to repeat "web design Lagos" in every paragraph.
Write for the customer first. Use the language your customers actually use when describing their problem, service, product, or location.
6. Make Your Location Clear When It Matters
For businesses serving specific locations, geographical information can be useful.
A business operating in Lagos should make its relevant service areas clear where appropriate. This could include a dedicated location page, service descriptions, contact information, or useful explanations of where the company operates.
However, simply creating pages filled with lists of Nigerian cities does not automatically create strong local SEO. Location information should provide genuine value to people who may actually use the service.
7. Optimise Your Images
Images are useful for demonstrating products, projects, locations, people, and services, but they should also be implemented properly.
Use descriptive filenames where appropriate, provide meaningful alternative text when an image conveys useful information, and optimise image sizes so that they do not unnecessarily slow the page down.
A construction company, for example, can use project photographs to demonstrate its work while providing appropriate descriptions that help users and search systems understand what the images represent.
8. Connect Your Pages With Internal Links
Your website should not consist of isolated pages.
Internal links help visitors move between related information and help search engines discover relationships between pages. A service page could link to relevant case studies, an FAQ, a contact page, or another related service.
This also helps visitors continue their journey instead of reaching the end of one page and having to start searching again.
9. Write Useful Meta Descriptions
A meta description can provide a short explanation of what a webpage contains. It may appear beneath the page title in search results, although search engines can choose to display different text.
A good description should accurately summarise the page and give users a reason to consider visiting it. It should not simply become a list of keywords.
10. Keep Your Business Information Consistent
On-page SEO does not exist separately from your wider online presence.
Your website should use a consistent business name and provide accurate information about your services and contact details. Where relevant, this information should align with important business profiles such as your Google Business Profile and LinkedIn page.
Consistency helps customers understand that the different online references belong to the same business and reduces confusion when they move between platforms.
11. Don't Forget Technical Foundations
Good on-page content cannot compensate for a website that search engines cannot properly access.
Important pages should be crawlable and indexable where appropriate. Check for issues such as accidental noindex directives, broken links, incorrect canonical tags, poor URL structures, server errors, and pages that are inaccessible through normal site navigation.
On-page SEO works best when the underlying website is technically sound.
12. Review Your Pages Regularly
SEO is not something you complete once and never revisit. Businesses change their services, prices, locations, contact details, and customer needs.
An old service page can therefore become inaccurate even if it once performed well. Regularly reviewing important pages helps ensure that the information remains useful and reflects what the business actually offers.
The goal is not to constantly rewrite pages for the sake of SEO. It is to keep the website accurate, useful, and relevant.
On-Page SEO Is About More Than Keywords
On-page SEO is often reduced to the question of where to put keywords, but the bigger objective is much more practical.
A strong page should make it easy for visitors to understand what the business offers, answer relevant questions, provide useful information, and guide people toward the next step. Search engines benefit from many of these same qualities because clearer and better-organised information is easier to interpret.
For Nigerian businesses, the opportunity is not simply to add more keywords. It is to build webpages that clearly communicate what the business does and why someone searching for that service should pay attention.
