What Is an AI Visibility Score?
Synoloop Solutions 7 min read

Search is changing.
For years, businesses have focused heavily on whether their websites appear when someone searches for their products or services on Google. You may already track rankings, organic traffic, keywords, and other SEO metrics to understand how visible your website is in traditional search.
But people are increasingly asking AI systems questions directly. Instead of searching through several websites, someone may ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or another AI system to recommend a business, explain a service, compare options, or help them decide what to buy.
That creates another question for your business: when someone asks AI about what you offer, does your business appear?
This is where AI visibility becomes important.
What Is an AI Visibility Score?
Measuring How Your Business Appears in AI Answers
An AI Visibility Score is a measurement used to understand how often and how prominently a business or brand appears in AI-generated answers for relevant questions.
There is currently no single industry-wide formula for calculating the score. Different companies and tools use different signals, including brand mentions, citations, recommendations, position in an answer, query coverage, and comparisons with competitors.
The underlying idea is much simpler than the different scoring systems may make it seem.
When people ask AI systems questions related to your business, how often does your business show up?
A business that appears consistently across relevant questions has stronger AI visibility than one that is rarely or never mentioned.
How Is AI Visibility Different From SEO?
SEO Helps You Get Found; AI Visibility Looks at What Happens in AI Answers
SEO and AI visibility are closely connected, but they are not the same thing.
SEO focuses on making your website easier for search engines to discover, understand, index, and rank. AI visibility looks at whether your business is actually being represented when AI systems generate answers to questions related to your industry.
For example, imagine you run a web development company in Lagos. Your website might rank well on Google for a search such as “web development company in Lagos.” That is useful, but it does not automatically mean that an AI system will recommend your company when someone asks, “What are some good web development companies in Lagos?”
The two areas therefore work together. Your website still needs a strong technical and content foundation, but you also need to consider how clearly your business, expertise, services, and information can be understood across the wider web and by generative systems.
Where GEO Comes In
This is also where Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) becomes relevant.
GEO is concerned with improving how your business and content can be understood and represented in generative search experiences. AI visibility is more focused on measuring the outcome: are you actually appearing when those questions are asked?
You can think about the relationship in a simple way:
SEO helps improve your visibility in traditional search. GEO focuses on your visibility in generative search. AI Visibility Score gives you a way to measure the result.
It is not a replacement for SEO. In fact, a strong technical and content foundation can support both.
What Can Affect Your AI Visibility?
Your Content Needs to Clearly Explain Your Business
AI systems need enough information to understand what your business is, what you offer, who you serve, where you operate, and what makes you relevant to a particular question.
If your website simply says that you are a “leading solutions provider” without explaining what those solutions actually are, there is not much useful context to work with.
Your content should naturally answer the questions your potential customers have. If you provide website audits, for example, your website should clearly explain what a website audit is, what you check, who needs one, and what problems your service can help identify.
This is where semantic relevance becomes important. You should not simply repeat a keyword over and over. Your content should cover the concepts, entities, questions, services, locations, and relationships that genuinely describe your business.
The Web Around Your Business Matters Too
Your website is important, but it is not necessarily the only information available about your business.
AI systems can encounter information through websites, business directories, publications, reviews, social profiles, third-party articles, and other sources. Different AI platforms also use different retrieval and information systems, so the sources influencing an answer can vary from one platform to another.
This means your online presence should tell a reasonably consistent story.
Your business name, services, location, expertise, and other important information should not appear completely differently from one platform to another. The clearer and more consistent your digital presence is, the easier it becomes for systems and people to understand what your business actually represents.
How Can You Check Your AI Visibility?
Start With Questions Your Customers Would Actually Ask
You do not need an expensive monitoring platform just to get an initial idea of your AI visibility.
Start by thinking about what your potential customers would ask if they had never heard of your business but needed the type of service you provide.
Avoid starting with a question such as “What do you know about my company?” because that is a branded query. It tells you whether the AI knows your name, but it does not tell you whether the AI would naturally surface your business to someone looking for a solution.
Instead, use questions where your business has to compete for attention.
For a website audit company in Nigeria, for example, you might test questions such as:
- Who provides website audits in Nigeria?
- What are the best website audit companies in Lagos?
- Who can help a Nigerian business improve its website?
- What companies provide website security audits in Nigeria?
- What should a business look for when choosing a website audit company?
These questions are much more useful because they represent situations where a potential customer may actually be looking for a business like yours.
Try a Simple AI Visibility Score
Score Yourself Out of Five
Now you can turn the exercise into a simple measurement.
Take five relevant, non-branded questions and ask them across the AI platforms you want to monitor. For each question, record whether your business appears in the answer.
Give yourself one point when your business appears and zero points when it does not.
If your business appears in four of the five questions, your simple test gives you:
4/5 = 80%
If you appear in only one:
1/5 = 20%
This is not a universal industry-standard AI Visibility Score. It is simply a practical baseline that you can use to understand where your business currently stands and compare your results later.
For a more useful test, do not record only whether your name appeared. Also look at how you appeared.
Was your business recommended or merely mentioned? Was your website cited? Were you described accurately? Which competitors appeared instead? Were you near the beginning of the answer or buried at the bottom?
These details can tell you much more about your visibility than a single number.
The Five-Question Challenge
How Visible Is Your Business to AI?
Think about the questions a potential customer might realistically ask an AI system when looking for a business like yours. Write down five non-branded questions related to your industry, service, product, or location.
Then run each question through the AI platforms your customers are likely to use.
For each question, record whether your business appears in the answer and give yourself one point when it does.
Your Five Questions
-
What are the best [type of business/service] in [location]? Did your business appear? Yes / No — 1 / 0
-
Which [type of business/service] would you recommend for someone looking for [specific need]? Did your business appear? Yes / No — 1 / 0
-
Where can I find a reliable [product/service] in [location]? Did your business appear? Yes / No — 1 / 0
-
What are the top [type of business/service] for [specific customer or use case]? Did your business appear? Yes / No — 1 / 0
-
Which [type of business/service] offers [specific feature, benefit, or solution] in [location]? Did your business appear? Yes / No — 1 / 0
Total Score: ___ / 5
How Did You Score?
A 5/5 means your business appeared in every question you tested.
A 3/5 means you are appearing in some relevant customer conversations, but there are still opportunities to improve your visibility.
A 0/5 or 1/5 suggests that your business may have significant room for improvement when it comes to being discovered through AI-generated recommendations.
Remember, these are not fixed rankings. AI answers can change depending on the platform, model, wording, location, available sources, and time of the search.
That is why a proper AI visibility measurement should use repeated tests and a consistent set of questions rather than relying on a single search.
For now, though, the five-question challenge is a simple way to see whether AI can actually discover your business when your name is not mentioned.
Ask the questions your customers are asking.
Then see if AI knows your business exists.
Ready to Improve Your Visibility?
If your score was lower than expected, that does not necessarily mean your business is invisible. It means there may be gaps in how your business is represented, understood, or discovered across search and AI systems.
At Synoloop Solutions, we help businesses identify those gaps through website and digital visibility audits, including the technical, content, search, and AI-facing elements that can affect how your business is discovered online.
