What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
Synoloop Solutions 10 min read

For years, businesses have asked one simple question about their websites:
“How do I get people to find me on Google?”
That question is still important. But there is now another question businesses need to start asking:
“What happens when people ask AI(Gemini, Claude or GPT) to find a business like mine?”
People are now using AI-powered tools to ask questions, compare options, find services, understand products, and make decisions. Instead of receiving only a list of websites, they can receive a direct answer that may mention particular businesses, products, or services. This creates a new area of digital visibility that businesses need to pay attention to.
We call this Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO.
So, What Is GEO?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the process of improving your website and online presence so that AI-powered systems can better discover, understand, and represent your business when generating answers to relevant questions.
In simple terms, GEO is about helping AI understand who you are, what you do, who you serve, where you operate, and why your business is relevant.
Think about it this way.
With SEO, we want search engines to understand our website so that our pages can appear when someone searches for something relevant.
With GEO, we want the information available about our business to be clear and useful enough that AI systems can understand our business when generating answers to relevant questions.
This does not mean we are trying to force an AI to mention us. It means we are making sure that when an AI system looks for information about a particular topic, our business has a clear and credible digital presence that it can understand.
GEO vs SEO: What Is the Difference?
SEO and GEO are closely connected, but they are not the same thing.
SEO is primarily concerned with visibility in search engines. We optimize our website so search engines can crawl it, understand its content, and determine when our pages are relevant to searches.
GEO is concerned with visibility and representation in generative AI experiences. We want AI systems to be able to understand our business, our content, and our relevance to the questions people are asking.
For example, someone may search Google for:
“Website audit companies in Lagos.”
That is a traditional search scenario.
But another person may ask an AI system:
“Can you recommend a company in Lagos that can audit my business website?”
The intent is similar, but the experience is different. In the first case, the search engine may return a list of pages. In the second, the AI system may generate an answer and potentially mention particular businesses based on the information it can access and evaluate. That is the space GEO is concerned with.
GEO Does Not Replace SEO
This is an important distinction.
GEO is not SEO's replacement.
In many ways, GEO depends on having a strong digital foundation in the first place.
Your website still needs to be accessible. Your pages still need to be structured properly. Your content still needs to be useful. Your business information still needs to be clear. Your website still needs to be technically sound.
These are all areas that traditional SEO already cares about.
The difference is that with GEO, we start thinking beyond traditional search results.
We ask whether your information is also clear, structured, consistent, and useful enough for AI systems to understand and potentially use when answering questions.
So we don't see it as:
SEO vs GEO.
We see it as:
SEO + GEO.
SEO helps your business remain discoverable through traditional search while GEO helps prepare your digital presence for generative search and AI-driven discovery.
How Do You Use GEO on Your Website?
GEO is not a switch you turn on.
There is no single piece of code that makes an AI system recommend your business.
Instead, GEO involves improving the information and structure surrounding your business so that both people and machines can understand it more easily.
Here are some of the areas we would start with.
1. Clearly Explain Who You Are
Start with the basics. Can someone visit your website and immediately understand who your company is, what you do, where you operate, and who you serve?
Your homepage, About page, service pages, contact information, and other important pages should communicate these things clearly.
If your website simply says that you are an “innovative technology company” but doesn't clearly explain what you actually provide, you are making it harder for both people and systems to understand your business.
Your business should not be a mystery.
Tell people—and AI—exactly who you are.
2. Clearly Explain What You Offer
Your services should have clear names and descriptions. If you provide website audits, don't hide that information inside a generic services page. Create a dedicated page that explains what a website audit is, what you check, who needs one, what problems you solve, and how someone can get started. The same principle applies to every important service your business provides. The clearer the relationship between your business → your service → the problem you solve, the easier your digital presence is to understand.
3. Answer the Questions Your Customers Ask
One of the simplest ways to approach GEO is to think about the questions your customers are already asking.
What do they want to know before buying from you?
What problems are they trying to solve?
What would they type into Google?
What would they ask ChatGPT or another AI assistant?
If you provide website audits, those questions might include:
- “What is a website audit?”
- “How do I know if my website is working properly?”
- “How much does a website audit cost?”
- “What does a website audit check?”
- “Why is my website not generating leads?”
These questions can become useful pages and articles on your website. Instead of creating content simply because you want to rank for a keyword, you are creating content because your potential customer actually needs the answer.
4. Make Your Content Easy to Understand
Good GEO content should not be unnecessarily complicated.
If your page answers a question, answer the question clearly, Use descriptive headings, Break complicated ideas into understandable sections, Explain technical terms, Use examples where they help, Make important information easy to find.
This is useful for people first, but it also gives AI systems clearer information to work with so your goal should not be to write content that sounds intelligent. Your goal should be to write content that is useful.
5. Keep Your Business Information Consistent
Imagine your website says that you provide website audits in Lagos, but another business directory says you provide services only in Abuja. Or your website uses one company name while your social profiles use another. Or your website says you provide five services while your other online profiles describe completely different services.
Inconsistency creates confusion. Your company name, services, location, contact information, descriptions, and other important business details should be kept as consistent as possible across your legitimate online presence. If people can clearly understand your business, that is good. If different sources describe your business in completely different ways, that is something worth fixing.
6. Build Useful Supporting Content
Don't make your website only about selling let it teach people, do this by explaining your industry, answering common questions , publishing case studies, sharing useful insights.
This gives your website more useful information surrounding the subjects your business operates in.
For example, a company that provides website audits could publish content about website performance, SEO, GEO, security, user experience, website maintenance, conversion problems, and other topics connected to website health.
Over time, your website becomes more than a place that says “buy from us.” It becomes a place that understands and explains the problem you solve.
7. Build Your Wider Online Presence
Your website is important, but it is not the only place your business exists. Your company may also have social profiles, business listings, articles, interviews, partnerships, directories, reviews, publications, and other legitimate references across the internet. These should all reinforce the same basic understanding of your business.
We are not talking about creating fake mentions or trying to flood the internet with your company name. We are talking about building a genuine digital presence. The more clearly your business exists across the web, the more information there is available for people—and systems—to understand what your business is about.
How Do You Know If Your GEO Is Working?
This is one of the most important questions. You don't want to spend time improving your digital presence without having a way to determine whether it is making a difference.
The first thing to understand is that GEO does not currently work like a traditional Google ranking where you can simply say:
“We are number one.”
AI-generated answers can vary depending on the system, the question being asked, the available information, and the context of the conversation. So we need to look at GEO from several angles.
1. Ask AI Questions Your Customers Would Ask
Start by creating a list of real questions your potential customers might ask. For example:
“What are the best website audit companies in Lagos?” “Who provides website audit services in Nigeria?” “Which companies can help me improve my business website?” “Who can audit my e-commerce website in Lagos?”
Then test those questions across the AI systems your potential customers are likely to use and look at whether your business appears. More importantly, look at how it appears.
2. Check Whether AI Understands Your Business
Being mentioned is not enough, Ask AI systems questions about your company.
“What does Synoloop Solutions do?” “What services does Synoloop Solutions provide?” “Where is Synoloop Solutions based?” “Who should use Synoloop's website audit service?”
Then check the answers, Is the information correct? Are your services correctly described? Is your location correct? Is your business being confused with another company? Does the AI understand what your company actually does?
This gives you another way of measuring GEO. GEO is not only about being mentioned. It is about being understood correctly.
3. Check Whether Your Website Is Being Referenced
When an AI system provides sources or links, pay attention to where the information comes from. Is your website being referenced? Are your relevant pages being used? Are other websites describing your business correctly? Is the AI relying on outdated information?
This can help you understand how your wider digital presence is being represented. Also remember your site can't be referenced if you don't have anything that can be referenced.
4. Track Traffic and Leads
Ultimately, visibility is useful because we want it to lead somewhere. If people discover your business through AI-powered experiences, you want to know whether they eventually visit your website, contact you, request a quote, make a purchase, or take another valuable action.
That means your normal analytics and conversion tracking still matter. We should not celebrate simply because an AI mentioned your business. The better question is:
“Did that visibility help someone discover and engage with our business?”
GEO Is About Being Understood
There is a simple way we like to think about GEO.
SEO helps people find you.
GEO helps AI understand you.
Of course, the reality is more complicated than two sentences. But the principle is useful.
Your website should clearly communicate who you are, what you do, who you serve, and why your business is relevant. Your content should answer real questions. Your online presence should be consistent. Your website should be technically sound. And the information surrounding your business should accurately represent you.
That is the foundation we believe businesses should be building as AI becomes a bigger part of how people discover information.
Why Should Nigerian Businesses Care About GEO?
Nigerian businesses are already competing for attention online. A potential customer can discover your business through Google, social media, recommendations, directories, or increasingly through AI-powered tools. That means simply having a website is no longer enough.
You need to think about whether your business can be discovered and understood wherever your potential customers are looking for information. For Nigerian businesses, this creates an opportunity. Businesses can start building their GEO foundation now instead of waiting until AI-driven discovery becomes even more competitive.
The businesses that clearly explain who they are, what they do, where they operate, and the problems they solve will have a much stronger digital foundation to build on.
Start Preparing Your Website for GEO
At Synoloop Solutions, we look at websites from more than one perspective. We want to know whether your website can be found, whether people can use it easily, whether it works properly, whether it is secure, and whether it actually supports your business. Can your digital presence be understood by AI?
That is where GEO comes in, You don't need to completely rebuild your website overnight, Just Start with the basics. Make your business information clear, Answer your customers' questions, Build useful content, Keep your information consistent, Make your website technically sound.
Then measure how your business is being represented across AI-powered search experiences.
